The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Thank you very much for your note. Its very good of you, dear. I shall
try to stay on here as long as I can, but I doubt if I shall be able
to after about the 20th of November. That will give me about two weeks
in Cape Town before I sail. I shall have to have my clothes put right
& buy one or two little things because I am sure to be unable to do
any shopping for some time after I arrive in Europe. I am going to
Alice Corthorn when I land for the short time I am in England. I shall
cable to her from Madeira to send me a nurse or someone to meet me at
Southampton if I’m not able to look after myself, but I’ve got
such a nice cabin I am sure I shall be all right. Its on the upper
(Promenade) deck with two windows & a heater for cold weather, & by
paying only a guinea extra I can have an electric fan fitted in for
the tropics, so I shall be in clover – as far as any human being can
on board ship!!

My dear friend Mrs Haldane Murray is coming here for a few days to
stay at the hotel to say good bye to me before I leave. I’m sure I
have the dearest & best friends of any person in the world. You are
all so good to me.

I hope Dot is getting on flourishingly with her law work. It will be
so nice to see you all; but it will be so hard to leave my old man
here in de Aar. Its good it suits him better than it suits me.

Good bye. Many thanks. Love to all.
