Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Dear Friends

3 I’m very ill. I think the end is coming, but it may be such a long
4end, like Etties. Oh you must be so glad for me if you hear it has
5come quickly. My friends want me to go the England on the 2nd of
6December in the Edinburgh Castle, but it doesn’t seem to me it can
7go on till then. Dear ones please know how I have loved you, & know
8how how beautiful you seem to me. Good bye my darlings. I would come
9down to the sanatorium at Plumstead but I could not stand the damp at
10this time. I am perhaps going to Graaff Reinet I have asked Mrs Murray
11to try & get me a room there with a fire place. Perhaps if I got lower
12I should rally.

18Oh its so hard to do nothing more for your dear fellow men & so much
