Dear old sister
It seems a long time since I wrote to you, but it’s longer I think
since you wrote to me!
Have you heard that Julie Brown is engaged to marry Hugo Naude? He
will get a good wife.
Yesterday I got a wire to say my dear friend little Dora Cawood had
just passed away peacefully in her old home at Ganna Hoek. She is the
sister of that Mrs Stanley you met at Takastad. Such a beautiful
character – the flower of her family. Why is it that people who die
of consumption often seem to have such very beautiful characters?
I was surprised to hear our little Ursie was to study medicine after
all. I’ve not heard from fro her except two post cards since Xmas
time when I was with you. I am so anxious to know what her plans
exactly are? Is she going to the Woman’s Medical School in London? I
got a picture card from her saying she was having a splendid time at
the Lakes, but nothing more. I know darling, what a great sacrifice it
must be to you to think you baby will be away so long, but she will
come to see you & you will go to her. A parents life is all one long
sacrifice; & I think children only can realize what parents they have
had in a case of parents like you & Will, when in years to come they
have children of their own growing up.
Good bye, dear. I hope you have quite got over that trouble with your
nose & throat. Cron sends much love. I am very busy weeding my garden
whenever I am well enough
Your little sister
