The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date and the name of the addressee have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was in Cape Town from early to mid June 1912 for the funerals of her sister Ettie Stakesby-Lewis and her mother-in-law.
Tuesday
I did not get away last night. I was too tired to go I shall stay till
the end of the week. Cron’s mother died on Saturday & was buried at
Muizenberg on Sunday afternoon at the same time Ettie was buried at
Maitland. Two of my sisters little step grand-children were also
buried on Sunday morning having died the night before. My
mother-in-laws death was very terrible in its suffering at the very
end. I wanted them not to tell Cron ^of her terrible last sufferings^
but they had written. I would have gone home today but I am so anxious
not to get home feeling ill, but able to make things bright Its good
to see you two so happy together. I will send you that letter &c from
the Dr in Basutoland as soon as I get home.
