The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

3 Darling Fan Such excitement & joy here at receiving your wire. The
4weather here is just perfect after the rain: I’m sure it will set our
5girl right at once. I am a little afraid of the dullness her for her.
6But she will enjoy Cape Town & her beautiful home all the more after a
7stay here!

9 Please wire me whether she comes by the morning train on Monday or the
10evening train, as there are two. One comes here in the morning & one
11in the evening. I do only wish one could get cart & horses here that I
12could take her out a little. This is the only place I know of in South
13Africa where such a thing as cart & horses is not to be got! The old
14horse that took me to the station when I went to the Zambesi has died
15of hunger! Perhaps however Dot will give you such a flourishing
16account of de Aar as a cold cure that if ever you have a cold you will
17come rushing up to me to be cured, if ever you have a cold.

19 I hope Will & the children have not felt the heat in England too much.

21 Good bye dear. I hope you will get Nell Borrows or some one you love
22to stay with you while Dot is away to cheer you up
