Dearest Friend

I got the letter this morning. I fear you are very very unwell, & I am
in a way sorry you could not go to England because one must try to
forget South African affairs. There are so many other things in the
world to think of if one had but the strength. I hope Uitkÿk will do
you good. As soon as it gets warmer here I will let you know. If only
I had a spare bedroom where I could keep you warm, I would say come
here at once. I long so to see Miss Greene. It has been an absolutely
heart breaking blow for her; & it will be still two weeks ^nearly^
before she can get letters telling her all.

I love so to think of you at Uitkyk, dear old Uitkyk, the place of all
others I should choose to be in to face a terrible blow. Give my love
to Mrs le Roux & tell me about the little baby & Lizzie. Dear one you
will be careful not, ever, to discuss Cron with them. Le Roux is now
his bitterest enemy & will turn any little word you may say against
him at the next election by repeating it at Beaufort & Prince Albert.
I would not discuss politics with le Roux at all even as regards
Merriman or Sauer or your brothers I have reason for what I say, which
I will explain when

^we meet. But I know I am right. - destroy this letter. Cron is not yet
back. I have just had a wire to say he will not be here before Friday
evening. I am very anxious about you my friend. You seemed to me not
very far from a complete nervous break-down. I do hope Uitkyk will do good.^
