6 Thank you for your card. I have got such wonderful photographs of my
7little mother some taken when she seemed so well two days before her
8death; & oh, such a wonderful wonderful picture taken two hours after
9she went to rest. Oh the glorious rest & calm. And it will come to us
10too. I will show them you when you come here.

12 Miss Hobhouse has written to say she would like to come here for a few
13days on the 15th of October. I can’t get any one to take her in so
14she will have to go to the hotel if she comes. I’m so sorry. But the
15hotel is not a bad as it was; some quiet little Jews keep it who are
16anxious to please one.

18 I am so thankful I went down to see her when I did. That Friday
19evening when I was walking alone towards the kop & you & Miss Greene
20were walking out the other way, it came to me with such imperativeness,
21 that I must go down to Cape Town & go down on the Sunday, not any
22later. I was all so well that I went. It seemed such a comfort & help
23to my darling husband too. It is one of the things I unreadable shall
24always feel grateful for.

29 We have had no fruit no vegetables no butter no milk here, but at the
30hotel they had vegetables they ordered up from some where. We have
31plenty of eggs just now, that’s all. I’m thinking of Miss Greene
32if she comes. I always manage to have dried fruit stored, that takes
33the place of vegetables to some extent.

35^The drought here is becoming very awful; but tonight it really looks
36as if it were turning towards rain. The three little meerkats are
37running about now & trying to sit on their hind legs like the old ones,
38 & tumbling over in the funniest way. It is beautiful to see Tommie &
39‘Arriet petting them. I think meerkats are the sweetest little
40things that ever were except dogs. Good night my tender love to you

45 ^We get numbers of letters from Beaufort West & Cape Town saying there
46is not the slightest chance for Le Roux; but Cron says he is not going
47to stand against him: they can put up someone else. If le Roux
48doesn’t withdraw they are going^
