The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Hanover from September 1900 to October 1907, after 1902 with visits, sometimes fairly lengthy, elsewhere.

3 Let me know how Will does at his exam as soon as the lists are out. I
4don’t see the papers. Don’t forget. Please ask Mrs ?Dearnish for the
5money she still has to send me some more tea by parcels post It’s no
6use sending anything by train I shall not get & its only 8 a pound by
7Parcels Post. I can get the tea here for 6d a pound, but its so old
8that it has no strength.

13 I hear from Ettie how much the little mother enjoyed her day at
14Lyndall. Do you & Will think her so much improved as Ettie does. Ask
15Will & tell me whether he thinks she is much better than when I saw
16her. He knows how she was.

20 NB Has my Bank Book by any chance turned up at Lyndall Newlands?
21Please tell me: it has been lost for some time. The Bank Manager in
22Cape Town says he by mistake addressed it

26 ^I’ve sold my little house in Kimberley so I’m able to pay all my debts
27& have a little over. I had to sell it for much less than I gave, but
28one is glad these times to get what you can.^
