Dear Friend

I have just seen from the paper that Rhodes has got off! What does
Cape Town think of the way he conducted his election? Even among his
followers are not some beginning to find him out? It seems to have
been a great mistake that they did not base the action on his speeches
instead of his the circulars. Is there to be another trial?

Has your visit to Cape Town done you any good? I do hope you will be
rested before school starts again. Have you seen John X & have you
seen Mrs Sauer. I sometimes wonder if she is in any sorrow it is so
long since I heard from her.

My Matabelie boy is beginning to learn to set a table! Good bye. Give
my dear love to Miss Green. Yes, I am sure the folk at the convent
keep a very strict watch over my dear little mother.

I do hope your brother Charles will get in somewhere at the new
election, he is one of the half dozen men I should be most sorry to
see out of the house. Try & see the Governor before you leave, & tell
me your impressions of him. One thing is certain the Johannesburg
population will never fight: they are wind bags & money bags who make
the noise here, & the mass of the working men, & nearly all the
ordinary town’s folk are on the other side. But I do sometimes

^fear some big imperial move being worked up by Rhodes, Chamberlain,
Rothchilds, & Rosenberg &c. ^
