8 I have just got a letter from J.X. which he says he felt impelled to
9write me just to let me know how splendidly you were playing your part,
10 & which is full of enthusiastic sympathy with yourself. I need hardly
11tell you how glad this makes me. We are strong & shall conquer in the
12end if only our straight men will hold together. It is not the attacks
13of ones enemies but the half hearted support of ones followers that
14wears one out. As for "Jim" I know his wife’s influence will be all
15in the right direction, & that tells for something. If we can but hold
16together loyally for a time we must pull through. There’s a splendid
17photo of you in the African Review.

19 Cron has got a post in a firm here, but gets no pay for some months &
20after that only £15, but the thought that in a few years he will be
21able to provide well for his mother & sister makes it well ^worth while^
22to make any effort for the moment. Don’t trouble to reply to this. I
23hope you are sleeping again. Try taking Fellows Hypophosphates
24regularly after meals. It certainly does build up the nerve tissues &
25prevents that exhaustion which keeps one from sleeping.
