The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Kimberley from early August 1894 to November 1898. The start of the letter is missing.

3 Mr Cornwall, who is really only Mr Rhodes instrument is taking legal
4action against Cron ^for what he said^, & they have secured Mr Dick
5Solomon as their council barrister. Of course we shall lose the case,
6as we can’t fight the powerful combination & Cron will las but it may
7do good. If we were rich & could spend £2000 on the case we could call
8witnesses from Barkley &c & it might then do much good; we can only
9spend unreadable all we have. I knew Rhodes would in some way get his
10teeth fast into

14 Good bye, dear heart. We shan’t be able to go for a holiday this Xmas
15but perhaps in the springMarch Holidays you & Miss Greene must come &
16spend a week with us. It will be lovely & cool here then & I’m making
17a nice little garden round the house.
