Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The year has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Hanover between September 1900 and late 1907. Betty Molteno and Alice Greene stayed in Uitkyk while Schreiner was there, and were in Britain in 1905. The start of the letter is missing.

to Hanover for one week as they have a fortnights holiday for Easter.
I shall not be very sorry to leave Cape Town this time. Now I cannot
walk about ^much^ it does not help to be here hu much as I can’t see any
one. I’ve only been twice to my Camps Bay. It was the dear sweet
Purcells that made Cape Town so beautiful. Now she doesn’t like to
feel leave her husband even for a few hours, & I understand the
feeling so well. I hear good news of my dear little Kaffir boy. The
Browns
are going to settle out somewhere near Rondebosch I think.

The story is finished, but when I look at it critically I see it isn’t
any good so I’ll not send it dear.

Have you been to any good instrumental concerts in London? Does music
help you so wonderfully as it does me. Do you remember the happy
evenings at Uitkyk & the songs? Neta-Juaneta!
