Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

My dear old Boy

It was nice to have a peep at you. Please tell me know just when you
pass here. I hope its gone well with your cases. They never report the
Bloemfontein cases in Cape Town papers.

It’s beautiful of you dear to want to help me to go to Europe. I
would rather take help from you than any other human being in the
world. I’ve got got a plan by which you could help me with out
risking loosing any thing. I’ll write about it when I feel fitter.

Cron has withdrawn from the Commission in favour of Postma. Not
because Potsma is a better man than Duncan, but because of the
shameless way in which the government is backing & one may say,
forcing Duncan on. Only those behind the scenes know how the
government is working. I personally should back dear old Hertzog if
weren’t for the extreme views of his party on the native question.
But I don’t think their being in

^power would pan out so badly for the natives as the action of the
present gov – save me from my seeming friends! ^
