Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date of this letter has been derived from the postmark on an attached envelope, which also provides the address it was sent to. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time. The final insertion is on the back of the envelope.
Dear May

Thank you much for your letter. I am so glad Miss Hobhouse is coming
to you. I thought now your mother was away she might be without a real
home in Cape Town & wrote to Mrs Purcell to ask her to invite her. I
had a letter from your mother yesterday. I wish I could see more of
you when I am in Cape Town. Somehow we never seem to meet except on
the station platform.

Yours affectionately
Olive Schreiner
