4 Dear Fan, Thank you so much for your letter. Wouldn’t I like to come
5down but Cron says he can’t leave except perhaps at Xmas, & I shall
6try to hold on here as long as I can manage it But I fear I shall have
7to go somewhere by the end of November if the weather continues as it
8is now.

10 All the little squashes you sent have come up finely. I water them
11every day.

13 Our wells have not given in yet, as some people’s have.

15 I’m glad Alice Corthorn has seen Bessie. I’m sure she’ll be very
16fond of her: I wrote her about her.
