Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date of this letter has been derived from the postmark on an attached envelope, which also provides the address it was sent to. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Dear Laddie

Just got your wire. Don’t trouble to come & meet me, dear if it
breaks up your only free afternoon for going anywhere. I shall manage
all right. I’m "up to the ropes" in Cape Town. I’m not getting out
at Salt River as one gains only a few minutes, & there’s always a
hurry & worry there.

Just got my English mail. I am glad Anna Purcell has found so much
pleasure out of knowing Adela & Con.
