Dear Laddie

You & the wifie may like to see Alice’s letter about Dot. The little
lass will be grateful to you & unreadable her dear little mother for
the sacrifices you are making in letting her have this time for growth
& study, & you will be glad of it too some

I believe she will be your great joy & comport through life when you
are old folk.

Today my little baby died 13 years ago.

I hope your cold is better Laddie. Try "Powel’s Balsam of Aniseed"
Its the one thing that helped Fred during the last four years when his
cough got bad, & its the only thing that helps me.

I have been very ill since I came here, worse than in Cape Town. I
shall soon as I am a little better try to move on to Beaufort West
where the air is drier, & at need one can have some one in to help one.

I think if ever Fan & the young ones took a run to England Fan would
like it better if she boarded with Alice Corthorn than being at a big
hotel. The food would not be so grand, but Alice has a big house &
always people staying there, & she’d find it so much less lonely.
