The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Kimberley from early August 1894 to November 1898.

5 The sickness of stomach still goes on day & night so I can't write
6much to any one. I'd like to see you & talk.

8 Is that Miss Herold who killed herself the one they called May, & who
9went home to England in the same steamer with me? I somehow feel so
10anxious to know.

12 We have got a little trap & horse now, so when you come to Kimberley I
13will be able to send in & fetch you every day!!

15 I send in to the station every Saturday, to fetch some strawberry I
16have sent from Stellenbosch, & if are so sweet as to send me up any
17plants or cuttings any time if they are timed to arrive at the station
18on Saturday I get them at once.

20 I've hundreds of things to say, but I can't say them in a note.
