The Project is grateful to the National Library of South Africa (NLSA), Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Special Collections. The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Matjesfontein from mid April 1890 to mid March 1891, with occasional short visits elsewhere.
Darling Mary
I send you a few American reviews a publisher sent me this morning.
Please send them on to my Mother in enclosed envelope. I never read
reviews. I know some kind & sympathetic people & reviewers often are,
but its ?after always painful to hear people discuss ones work as if
you loved a man utterly, it would be painful to hear anyone talk of
your love for him, or his for you.
I was very ill in Grahamstown & have had to come back.
It is cold & rainy here, but I love Matjesfontein with all my heart.
Write me a few lines. I love you.
Olive
