The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that because the house painting was not done Olive Schreiner hoped to rent a room from Miss Viljoen, where she had previously had accommodation.

…I have not gone. My chest is very bad…

My chest has got much worse since I came to Hanover, such bad
expectoration & great pain in my chest. I can’t go back to Uitkyk as
the Le Roux’s have other visitors. It’s such a bitter
disappointment to me. I thought you would soon be back & we would be
so happy again together in our little house. I meant to go to
Bloemfontein today, get a Basuto boy or girl there, come back on
Monday & with the help of my Basuto girl all so nicely moved in as a
surprise for you if you came on Thursday. I don’t know what plan to
make… I am still at Du Toit’s. I haven’t been able to sleep
since I came. One feels a bit lonely & lost here. Will write & tell
you when I have any plan. My mind is so damp, I seem in a dream…
