The Project is grateful to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the University of Texas at Austin, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscript Collections. This letter is by and from Olive Schreiner, with Cronwright-Schreiner acting as her amanuensis or secretary. The letter is written on printed headed embossed notepaper.
New College Junior School,
Dear Mr Unwin
With this I return, corrected, the proofs which came this morning.
Mrs Schreiner says that she has looked carefully through ‘Dreams’
but cannot find any suitable quotations, and that therefore she has
abandoned the idea of inserting any quotation, either on the title
page or at the beginning of the two parts.
With regards to the dedication: the person by & whom it was to be
shown to Sir George Grey promised that he (Grey) should see it last
evening, & that he would at once acquaint her with Grey’s decision.
As soon as she has this, she will send you the dedication (either to
Grey or some one else, if he does not consent).
With regard to the other points raised in your letter, she will be
only too glad to help in any way in facilitating the publication of
the book, provided it goes forth with all the corrections of her final
With kind regards,
Yours very truly,
S.C. Cronwight Schreiner
