Legend
The Project is grateful to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the University of Texas at Austin, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscript Collections. This letter has been dated by reference to information written onto it by Ellis. Schreiner stayed in a number of hotels in Alassio in March, April and early May 1887.
Darling Boy I shan’t be able to write letters again for a long time
my head’s so bad. You mustn’t be sad sweet, & you mustn’t give
up your Hinton colours a bit more than you feel quite true. It’s not
the time to talk against anything or turn against a party when it’s
down. Sweet, I didn’t mean to hurt you. Yon know how grateful I am
for your love.

Don’t quarrell with Pearson his brain is in the state mine is in.

You know I trust you eh?

I am in such terror of next post with news from the Cape

Send me Karl Pearson’s paper. His name should ^must^ never be
mentioned by you or me again. You know I didn’t mean to sadden you, eh?

My Hary boy, you know I’m so grateful for your wonderful love, no
one has ever loved me so much, not even Karl Pearson, but he will love
me when all of you have forgotten me, just as I will love you always.

Notation
'Pearson's paper' is his 'Sex and Socialism', published in To-Day 1887 and republished in Karl Pearson (1888) The Ethic of Freethought London: T. Fisher Unwin. Draznin's (1992) version of this letter is in some respects different from our transcription.
