Dear Laddie

I was a disappointment when I got back from seeing you to find you’d
been to see me. I’ve only been out twice since I came so it was odd
I should miss you.

Even the flowers couldn’t console me, though one would have to live
in that desert of the upcountry plains (quite different to Cradock &
Beaufort) to know what one feels about flowers & green stuff when one
first comes down.

We are very comfortable here, & unless the weather gets very bad I
think we ^I^ shall be able to hold out, rain & all. I hope you are
feeling fit dear old man.

Life is curiously solitary to me in South Africa now, ^& you must love
me a lot because I need it.

^I’ll look in some morning on the chance of finding you.^
