The name of the addressee is also indicated by salutation. Schreiner was resident in Hanover from September 1900 to October 1907, after 1902 with visits, sometimes fairly lengthy, elsewhere.

3 Dear Friend

5 No post came yesterday but there is I hear one this morning & I am
6going down to get the letters All kinds of wild reports were flying
7about yesterday that Richmond was surrounded by the commando that 1,200
8men were marching into Hanover &c &c They have made loop holes all
9round the wall of my yard yesterday, so they evidently mean to use
10this place as a fort if the Boers come. One doesn’t know what
11
12 ^to believe any more.
