6 I’ve been ill since you left, the last week in bed. I am going up
7country as soon as I can hear of a place. Perhaps Lemoenfontein near
8Beaufort West, if that doesn’t do I must go to Richmond or Hanover.
9They think it will not be safe at the latter places because of martial
10law, but I care nothing about martial law if I can only breathe.
11Perhaps if I go up & find a nice place you might find it restful to
12come for a time.

14 My dear niece Eliza Findlay has been so kind to me staying with me at
15night. I am better today, but have been coughing up a good deal of
16blood & feel weak.

18 Good bye. I don’t feel any doubt the Republics will be free though
19we may not live to see it.
