Dear Friend

I’ve just sent off a cable to the Manchester Guardian. I don’t see
that it can do much good but Mr Hobson the representative of the
Manchester Guardian here so begged me to that I felt I must. Public
affairs make one very tired even here. You can’t think how much
writing even that cable cost me. I can write about anything else
without getting tired, but as soon as I write about South African
affairs it seems to break me down in the most curious way. It is 12
o’clock now & I am just going to bed. Tomorrow I am going to tell
you about such a great good fortune that has befallen us. I feel I
must share it with you.
