Legend
The Project is grateful to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the University of Texas at Austin, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscript Collections. In the absence of other information, dating this letter has followed Draznin (1992), who has done so by reference to a version in the Lafitte Letters typescript in the British Library. Schreiner first stayed in Llandrindod Wells from late July to late October 1915, and then again from mid June to mid September 1916.

Dear Havelock

Can you give me any news of the Zeppelin Raid on London? Such
wonderful stories are going about here, all Broad Street destroyed!
Many bombs on Hampstead & Golder’s Green! Many people killed. Of
course no one believes the Government accounts. How much better it
would be if once they could bring themselves to speaking the truth
about anything! People’s imaginations run so much further than the
most terrible facts.
