The Project is grateful to the National Library of South Africa (NLSA), Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Special Collections. This letter is a photocopy; the original cannot be traced. It has been dated approximately by reference to when Schreiner was living in Hanover. She was resident in Hanover from September 1900 to October 1907, after 1902 with visits, sometimes fairly lengthy, elsewhere.
Dear Mrs Wilson

I was simply horrified today to find your cookery books still here.
The very day you sent them I gave them to a little girl, & asked her
to return them to you. She forgot all about it & now I find them still
in the drawer What concerns me so is that I am sure you must have
needed them to make cakes &c for the ball.

I am so very sorry. I hope you are more rested than when I met you in
the street the other day.

Yours very sincerely
Olive Schreiner

^I think they let the little book lie about & get stained while I was
ill. But I’ve ordered four copies I like it so much so I’ll be able to
give you a new one.^
