The Project is grateful to the National Library of South Africa (NLSA), Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Special Collections. This letter is a photocopy donated to the NLSA with the original kept by Ellen Sauerlander's grandson. It has been dated by reference to when Schreiner wrote other letters to Ellen Sauerlander and when she stayed in Muizenberg, Blauuberg and other places in the Cape Town area.
Dear Mrs Sauerlander

I shall not need the pudding, & fruit again – but I am going to make
myself some sour milk, like the Kaffirs have. Could you tell the girl
to bring me up every morning early when the new milk comes, instead of
coffee or tea, a large glass of quite fresh milk ^in a jug^ so that I
could pour nt it into my sour milk bottle. And if she could bring me
up another large glass when the fresh milk comes in the afternoon. It
must be fresh milk if old or wild milk is put it in it spoils it. I
always take it at home instead of meat & other heavy things.

I’m so sorry to be always troubling you.

I shall be out all day at my brothers, but if they would put the milk
in my room, in a jug I will put it in my bottle when I come.

Yours ever
Olive Schreiner
