Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Havelock Ellis.

I could come on Thursday. I wish you didn't live so far. We might, if
you lived near here, often go out for half an hour to some gallery,
etc. I have not been to the National Gallery or the British Museum
since I came to London.

You see Bernard Shaw in his article in the Nation allows that England
or France would have crossed Belgium, just as Germany did, "if
necessary." Bernard Shaw can speak the truth sometimes. Have you read
Norman Angell's Patriotism under Three Flags? It's very good. A
splendid review of Maeterlinck in last Saturday's Nation; I am so glad
to find someone who expresses exactly my view. We are never so
solitary as we believe ourselves to be.
