Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Miss Louie Ellis.

I wonder how the world goes with you. I was married 13 days ago. We
came straight to our farm the same day. I was married in the old blue
black serge I wear every day. The terrible part was sitting down at
the table to sign my name.

My husband and I are like two “chums." We feel like children when we
are together somehow. I hope I shall have a little baby, Louie, but if
I don't I shall be satisfied too. I was so glad when I heard perhaps
you were going with Havelock to Italy; but again he says he is going
alone. Louie it's a wicked thing for human beings to live in great
cities. One may be as poor as possible (we are poor) and be quite
happy out in the open “veld" like this. You would like my husband;
he's a real man.
