When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.

5of it as I haven't copies of some. Do you think “The Artist's Secret"
6worth putting in? ... No, I'm not short of money, as I haven't to pay
7rent. It's travelling that's so fearfully dear. But I like this
8country and I know it was right that I came. I don't like to think of
9you all in that dark damp foggy winter. ... Can you lend me a book you
10used to have giving all the different medicines and their uses and
11effects and antidotes? I only care about scientific books now I am
12doing artistic work, and when I am doing scientific work I only care
13for poetry.
