5If Tant’ Sannie is a Dutch woman Bonaparte Blenkins is an Irishman!
6Fancy my Home Rule friends crying out that I am false to the cause
7that I have traverstied the Irishman!! It would be a sad day of art
8when each [papertorn] character not ideally perfect was regarded as an

Notation
The references are to characters in The Story of an African Farm. The articles referred to cannot be established. Rive's (1987) version misdates this letter as 22 April 1896, attaches it to another letter of this date addressed to Will Schreiner (Olive Schreiner BC16/Box1/Fold3/1896/13), and is also in a number of minor respects incorrect.
