The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner postcard, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The year has been written on this postcard in an unknown hand and the postmark is illegible. The address it was sent to and its addressee are written on the card. Schreiner stayed in Florence in January 1914, leaving on 11 January for Mentone and then Alassio. On the front of the postcard is a picture of the Campanile in Florence with ‘Firenze – Il Campanile di Giotto’ printed at the top.

Jan 11th We are just leaving Florence for Mentone. There is too much
2damp here just now. I shall return later. I am deeply grieved to hear
3of poor Miss Hobhouse’s break down. I think she should return to
4Europe as soon as possible.
