Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Dear Fan

I am sending off today three pacages by goods train addressed to Villa
Flandre. I expect I shall be there before them, but if they should
come before I do, please pay for them & I’ll pay you when I come. Its
safer not to pay for them before sending.

Don’t trouble to order the milk for me dear. Some one advised me to
try larger beer instead of milk for these intestinal pains. I have
been taking it for three days now, & it’s too wonderful, the pain has
entirely left me for the first time for over a year! Sometimes the
attacks are so bad I simply roll on the ground like a person in labour
pains. It’s mysterious that such a simple thing should help it so much,
after all the medicines I have tried which have done me not a bit of
good. Of course it may not keep on helping me; many things help for a
time & then leave off. but its wonderful. Old Ohlsson will have to
give me a thousand pounds for an advertisement "Olive Schreiner cured,
by Ohlsson’s lager Beer"!!! "Drink nothing but Ohlsson’s Lager Beer"!!!
Its very hot here today nearly 100 in the cool shade on the stoep in
the corner where the sun never comes, but I’m packing & putting the
house neat, & destroying old things.

Good bye, dear. I hope I shall still be so well when I arrive in Cape
Town.
