Thanks dear friend, but I can’t cash the cheque here as there has
been no bank open for some months.

News has just come that Mr Hofmeyr the Dutch minister & the wife of
one of the men to be shot are to leave at once for de Aar. So I
suppose they will be shot tomorrow morning. I thought we’d had
enough Schlacter’s Neks but it seems not. Oh, its such a mistake
from the British point of view. Oh if they could only see it. I’ve
wired to the general at de Aar asking for a pass to go & see him, but
he’s sent me no answer, & with out a pass from him I shall not be
allowed to leave the village,

Good bye dear. You & Miss Greene must not send the money I won’t use
it unless you assure me its not your own. I’m sure you can’t
afford it. The woman has 5 children living & is expecting another. The
father of the other young man was crying bitterly this morning. Send
this note ^my news^ on to Isabella Ford.
