6 I hear Hannah & Mrs Gie are from home visiting about the country &
7that Hannie has taken over their house. I want to let them know how
8much I like this place & what a sweet woman old Mrs de Villers is.
9I’ve got a very nice room at the unreadable house of the doctors
10widow. He died the other day – his name was Johnson, she says he was
11at school with Will at Templetons. He died of drink they say. She’s
12a very sweet sad looking woman. A great jingo, but we have made an
13arrangement never to refer to the war. This is the prettiest nicest
14little village I have seen, so clean & full of fruit trees with nice
15koppjes to walk to, & splendid air.

17 Is Hudson going up soon. Please let me know. I want to ask him to do a
18little ?thing for me if he goes. It won’t trouble him & will be a
19great service to me.

23 "Veg en ketze; alles sal reght com." Even if one doesn’t live to see
