Dear Friend

What did they say in Cape Town. Do your brothers think there is still
a chance of the Boers having another great victory? I do. If, however
they have promise of support from Russia Germany or France in the
final settlement they might just as well prepare for peace, if not
they ought to fight on for another six month, or a year. What do they
say in town was the real number of prisoners taken at ?Dorcloes Rant?
I hear a report there were but 200 instead of four. They lie so that
one can believe nothing.

I hope your little change to Cape Town did you good. I’ve not
exchanged one word with any one here since I came on politics. The
people here are all of course extreme jingoes. Old Mr MacRobert always
says that if they can take Steyn they ought to shoot him &c, &c. What
are your plans?
