Dear Friend

Your wire adds to my disappointment. I did, & do long so for the Kowie,
& the big waves, & the sand. I believe that it would do me more good
than anything! But when the doctor examined my chest he said the heart
was so much dilate that it would not be madness to go any where near
the coast, that I must go higher, not lower. And Cron was so against
the Kowie after that that I must go to Johannesburg. We shall stay at
Mr Lloyd’s. Oh, do you & Miss Green come up! It would change the
going from a pain to a pleasure to me. We would enjoy going about
there together, & it would do Miss Green all the good in the world to
have such a complete change of air.

I got a letter from Merriman this morning most enthusiastic over my
brother Will’s speech at the dinner to Hofmeyer. He said that the
report in the Times gives no conception of what it was. He has, he
said, heard many speeches but in his long life, but thinks he has
never heard Will’s speech surpassed for eloquence & feeling. I’m
sorry there isn’t a good report. Oh dear do, do, do, come to
Johannesburg. I wouldn’t ask you only for my sake, but I know it
would do you both good by being such a complete change of scene ^&
there have been some rains up there there will be no dust^

The journey isn’t very expensive. I want to go & see Amajuba &
Doornkop.

Good bye, dear
