Of course I didn’t misunderstand what Emmeline said about my book
and the vote. I’m sure she personally understood the book was only a
fragment - it does not deal with the woman’s question as a whole,
but only with a little part of the question of woman’s labour. I
don’t fancy many people read the introduction carefully - it was
written just to explain how it was the book dealt with only a small
bit of the woman’s question. Of course in England at this moment the
question of the vote comes first, all else is for the moment secondary.

Today you have your big gathering, and all my thoughts are with you. I
always believed Lloyd George & friends were going to play you false. I
never thought they (the politicians) would fail to find means to
strangle the bill this year. But you see, its your fight that is so
glorious to me, so in a way, I don’t mind how long it goes on. Its
educating women & men all the time! ...

How I wish I were with you now. If you had no wrong before you have it
now.

Taken from a heading: NO DRINK FOR WOMEN: the Liverpool Licensing
Committee have laid a report before the Magistrate in which they
recommend the later opening and earlier closing of licensed premises
in Liverpool, and restriction of the sale of intoxicating liquors to
women, and persons under sixteen years of age. O.S. comments: Isn’t
it shameful that women should be classed with children?
