The year has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident at The Homestead, Kimberley, from mid 1894 to late 1898. There appears to be a page or pages missing after Schreiner’s signature.

3My darling Boy I have just got your letter; I have no time to get you
4answer it, as the post is going out. Thank you for it, I dear, I will
5write at lenght this afternoon. Now I can only tell you I was glad to
6get it. I know that many people will not be able to understand, whose
7intense personal feeling for the man has been compatable with your
8action – but I need not say that I can.

14wretched piece of ground that Logan wants to get one of the most
15memorable of my life – when for a moment the veil that generally rest
16over Rhodes face was lifted, & I seem to see into the depths of his
17being - & every thing was stunted & burnt off – ‘Evil be thou my good.’
18I have had a hope that what had been stunted & burnt off by success
19& ambition might have come to life again under the pressure of worry
20in the last few years – but it [papertorn]
