Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The year has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident at Porchester Place from early April 1917 until August 1920, when she left Britain for South Africa. She stayed for a long weekend with Percy Molteno and his wife in mid November 1918.

Dear Laddie

Old Mrs Brackenbury is dead. Died rather suddenly, I think of
influenza. She was a rare old person, & is always associated with that
time at Nauheim & on the continent, which was the last ray of light in
my life.

W I ought to have followed your advice on Sunday & not gone to that
meeting, I’ll never go out again alone at night if I can help it;
but one feels one must fight to the end, its so hard to give in -
beaten.

Mrs Percy Molteno has kindly written to ask if it may not do me good
to go to their place in Surry for a few days, & she will come & fetch
me on Friday. If I’m not better I’ll come back on Monday, but if
its relieving me I’ll stay on there a few days more.

I’ll miss my chess on Sunday, its the one little excitement of my
life, & its so nice to see you & Fan.

Good bye dear,
