The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

My dear Laddie

3 I am rejoicing with you. I knew our boy would do well, but I wanted to
4know just what. Is the prize a medal or a money prize & how much? Is
5it for several years? I saw your good fight re the Native bill.

7 I wrote & asked Merriman why he didn’t vote against it. But he
8didn’t answer my question though he wrote a long letter!

13 The good news seemed to bring me good luck. For ten days I have not
14been able to lie down & have had to walk about almost night & day ^&^ to
15sleep sitting up in a chair get air, but last night I lay down flat, &
16slept for hours!

18 There is a talk of my going to England in December to get medical
19advice, but I think its too late, I’m going the way Ettie did. My
20friend Miss Emily Hobhouse has been almost cured by a wonderful man in
21Florence called Dr Carloni - but then her case was simple heart
22disease, no complications.

24 Its beautiful to know the dear children will be with you soon. If you
25can find time write & tell me if Ursie is much developed.
