Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. Will Schreiner went to Britain in July 1911, providing the approximate date of this letter. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.
My dear Laddie

It was good to get your letter from Madiera. A note from old J X & a
letter from Anna Purcell were both full of the praises of our young
one’s - & Anna’s of you.

I do hope the old head & heart are going to have a real time of rest.
Don’t come back sooner than you need.

If you want to do me a great service ask Alice Corthorn some time to
dine with you, or go to a theatre.

I hope you will see Adela’s little ones, especially my little Olive

I hear Dots cold does not leave her, & am asking her to come up a
little to visit me at de Aar this month instead of September as she
promised. I believe she would lose her cold here in a few days. I am
always anxious about the child: she seems to me too beautiful &
wonderful for life to let her go without some great blow, physical or
mental.
