Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Havelock Ellis.

It's just 12 o'clock. The middle of the night is the only time I can
write because then the vibration of the traffic leaves off and my
heart seems to rest. Do come and see me any time, but let me know
beforehand. I could meet you in Soho if the weather is tolerable but
it so seldom is. I am better than I was.

Have you read Keynes's new book, The Economic Consequences of the
Peace?
It's worthy of John Stuart Mill in its large truth-loving
spirit. ... Christmas is rather a sad time to a quite lonely person. I
like to think the little children are happy - but there is always the
thought of the starving ones in Europe, men, women and children. We
are a race of devils - shooting the Indians, starving the Russians and
Germans, trying to crush the Irish - and so pleased with ourselves! If
the Germans had done in Alsace what we have done in India we should
all rise up with a howl.
