When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.

4... Yes, there is a change of tone - it is principally caused by the
5rise of prices. This war will probably go on for another year and a
6half or two years. France and Germany would long ago have made peace,
7but England and probably Russia won't let them. She wants German traid
8and colonies. If the Imperialists were severely [beaten] in German West and in
9Egypt peace would probably come very soon, but as this is most
10unlikely to happen, it won't. I don't think that feebly gushing over
11the war does any good. To combine, as the labour party under Keir
12Hardie and some Social Democrats are doing in Germany, to protest
13against the action of their own government, is immense good. If women
14could combine - which they won't - in their millions to defeat the
15politicians of their own country at the next elections, and to prevent
16their husbands and sons from enlisting, that would do good, and
17anything one individual ever does to diminish this hideous
18nation-hatred does do good.
