Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given. The ‘something’ Schreiner was trying to write was either an allegory or her never completed ‘The Dawn of Civilization’.

I'm still here as I've not been able to find a quiet place. I am
troubled with the worst insomnia I have had for twenty years. To me
this is the most sordid war in which England has ever engaged. She is
backing Russia, not because she loves Russia but because millions of
her money are invested there, and millions more in France, whose money
system will break if the Russian autocracy falls. She fights Germany,
not to set the Germans free from military rule, but because she is her
trade rival whom she must crush. I am trying to write something on the
war, but I doubt whether it will be taken.
