Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Miss Adela Villiers (later Mrs. Francis Smith).

... You wouldn't know me again, I am so strong and well now. I spend
much of my spare time in the saddle or bathing in the river before the
house, and it's so beautiful to get out of the ice cold water and sun
oneself on the hot rocks for half an hour after the bath before one
dresses. My dear husband grows closer and dearer to me daily. I am
much, much more happy than I had hoped to be.

I wish you could have this beautiful African sunshine dear. I have had
asthma and was quite weak when I first came and now I am so strong.
Life is so infinitely beautiful when one is well.
