Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Miss Adela Villiers (later Mrs. Francis Smith).
Grahamstown, South Africa, 15th Jan.

... I'm having a very splendid time of rest and joy, travelling about.
I am always so happy and so well when I travel, and I think never in
my life have I been so followed by love and kindness from my fellows
as during the last two months. I have had a splendid time staying at
different farms. Now I am in Grahamstown, seeing my little mother. I
wish I could have shown her to you. She's one of the most wonderful
little women in the world, such a brilliant intellect, all intellect
in fact; it's from my German father we all get our strong emotions.

... I sometimes think I must be going to die, everyone is so kind to
me and everything is so happy! But think life does get happier as one
gets older.
