Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
1To Havelock Ellis.

4I cannot send the article this week. I must revise it first. It is
5much longer than I had thought, a short book, but really the best
6thing I ever did, I think. For three weeks I have been in a dream
7living with it and nothing else, and loving it, which seems strange
8about such an article, but it is such a relief to me to write it. I
9will post it here on the 4th of February; it ought to get to you on
10the 22nd. If you took it to the publishers at once in a cab it would
11not be too late for March. If the Nineteenth won't have it, try New

and then Fortnightly. I would give £50 to have it in the March
13number.
